A long time ago Newell McCarthy was the singer for a band, a few bands. Our bands. He told the truth a lot, he lied a lot, he was very fucking American, his childhood was Panamá, his adulthood lived mostly in NY and Medellin, he was a sweet talker, he was an asshole. He disappeared in 2006 somewhere near Barranquilla.
Two years ago, packages began arriving at his cousin's house with no note attached full of random things: audio tapes, scraps of paper with lyrics or chords, small bottles of liquor, a woman's shoe, receipts from 20 years ago.
The song ideas are definitely from Newell. But are they the "songs" of a living person? Or someone who found his stash. The band is named for that question.
NewellMcCarthyIsDead? is music produced and performed by the guys who used to be in Newell's bands with art and promotion by various spiritual kin. All lyrics and song structures are from Newell.
This make believe band creates songs from the puzzle boxes as they arrive. Live shows are produced by DJ Daniel Travieso with guest appearances from former friends and bandmates. In honor of Newell we often feature burlesque dancers, drag performers and other freedom fighters.
